Major Requirements

Effective Fall 2010, below are the Major Requirements for the Comparative Literature degree.

Preparatory Subject Matter: 16 - 46 Units
  • 8 units: Comparative Literature 1 or 2 AND 3 or 4.

  • 8 units: Two other lower division courses in Comparative Literature (selected from 1-53C excluding the 10 series and additional courses in the 1-4 series beyond the two required courses). It is recommended that students who do not use a European language toward the major take one of the remaining lower division courses in the 53 series, preferably the 53 course that relates to the region of the language the student is using to satisfy the upper-division language requirement in the major. 

  • 0-30 units: Foreign Language: Sufficient preparation to ensure satisfactory performance at upper-division level. Find a language to love: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Hindi, Latin, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish!

Depth Subject Matter: 16 - 46 Units
  • 20 units: Five upper-division Comparative Literature courses including at least:
    • one course in a major period (such as 164A-164B-164C-164D) OR
      movement (such as 168A-168B, 169) OR
      genre (such as 160A-160B, 161A-161B, 163, 166A-166B)
    • Comparative Literature 141 (to be taken during junior year)
    • Comparative Literature 195 (to be taken in the spring quarter before graduation)
  • 12 units: Three upper-division literature courses in a language other than English.

  • 8 units: Two additional upper-division literature courses in Comparative Literature or in any other program including English or literature in translation.

Total Units for Major: 55 - 86 units
