Thomas Pavel is the Gordon J. Laing Distinguished Service Professor in Romance Languages and Literatures, Comparative Literature, the Committee on Social Thought, and Fundamentals at the University of Chicago. A Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Pavel's books, including The Lives of the Novel (Princeton, 2013), The Spell of Language (Chicago, 2001), and Fictional Worlds (Harvard, 1986), are widely esteemed for their contributions to literary theory and history.
